DepED-LDN conducts SEMINAR-WORKSHOP OF ENGLISH, SCIENCE AND MATH TEACHERS IN THE INTEGRATION OF ICT FOR SECONDARY CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

by Wilma O. Bulaclac, KNHS

The Department of Education, Division of Lanao del Norte conducted a Seminar-Workshop of English, Science and Math Teachers (ESM) in the Integration of ICT for Secondary Curriculum and Instruction at Kapatagan National High School on August 18-20, 2009.
The opening program was graced by Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Maria Luisa B. Mutia, CESO V. The SDS stressed the advantages of integrating ICT in classroom instructions. She pointed out that with ICT, the teacher does not only give instruction and discusses the lesson but he/she facilitates learning by providing students more opportunities to discover new things and to enhance their skills. Education Program Supervisor for Science, Belen T. Bastillada, Education Supervisor for Mathematics Tita F. Tubongbanua, ICT Supervisor Florderick S. Velarde and Division English Coordinator Maria Eva S. Edon were present from Day 1 to Day 3 of the training.
Each learning area (English, Science and Math) of every secondary school in the division was represented by one subject teacher as identified by the school principal. The purpose and objective of the said activity was to train teachers to integrate knowledge and information gathered from the web with their lessons.
ESM teachers were exposed to the creation of blogs which will allow the students to see, answer and submit their activity/homework/assignment through the web. As mentioned by the Division English Coordinator, Mrs. Ma. Eva S. Edon, ICT aids the teachers to facilitate students learning which allows more hands on activities for students rather than chalk talk by the teachers. Since students nowadays are into this type of technology and many of them often go to internet cafes for online games, teachers might as well use this line of interest for the learners’ benefit. The participants were also taught how to download online video lessons and other relevant sources of information from the web to help them in the integration of ICT in each lesson.
Two facilitators for every learning area (ESM) were trained at RELC, CDO to echo this seminar-workshop in the division level. Ms. Wilma Bulaclac and Ms. Betty Guarin for English, Mr. Sabino Belnas and Mrs. Charlyn Aying for Science, and Mrs. Arlyn Tudela and Mrs. Sonia Gumilao for Math. The Division English Coordinator (Secondary), Mrs. Ma. Eva S. Edon also joined the group during the teachers trainers’ training in CDO.
